Somali Youth Engagement Summit 2014

We are pleased to invite you to our Somali Youth Engagement Summit on Thursday 25th of September 2014 at 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM  . The Youth Summit will take place at Hamilton House, Camden, London WC1H 9BD.

Unfortunately due to the complexity and emergence of terrorist groups in Somalia and now in Syria, there has been recent credible reports of Somali youths who has been radicalised into violent extremism. Evidence available to the authorities and the community suggests some of them have fled to these conflict areas to fight political and religious causes. The most recent case involves two young twin Somali sisters who run away from their homes in Manchester to join Terrorist organisations abroad.

For us as a community and youth leaders, this phenomenon is alarming and have organised a one day Somali Youth Summit in Camden to seek to understand and discuss this new challenge while also evaluating the root causes to this phenomenon. We do not think a one day summit will fully comprehend this challenge, but we hope it will provide the platform for dialogue across our community and policy makers. The summit will also provide the basis for research based recommendations carried out by a  Goldsmith College, University of London.

The event will be attended by 100 youths chosen across London. There will workshop groups in the afternoon to fully discuss these issues context, giving young people the opportunity freely suggest their recommendations or solutions to this complex issue. There will also be an opportunity for social media training, giving us the opportunity to understand the role of social media plays in the issue of violent extremism. The summit will also be done in partnership with the Home Office, London Borough of Camden and Wandsworth, Anti-Tribalism Movement and Elays Network.

Having been a strong supporters of Somali youths and contributors to the development of the Forum or Somali groups, we would be delighted to have you attend the event, which is a bottom approach community led event that will start a crucial dialogue on the complex issue of radicalisation and ways for the community to confront this threat at the local level.

Please email the event co-ordinator using mohamedlsyf@gmail.com by the end of this week if you are able to attend so that we can put forward attendance lists to the organising committee.
